‘Smiling, I watch the horses as they move towards me.
Beautiful animals, they graze here on the moors, and are left alone by my tribe.
We have many of their kind and now breed all we need. They are a sign of wealth and prestige and it is them that give us status amongst the other tribes of the Dumnonii.
This morning, I am heading up to the cliffs that overlook the sea and Lundy Island. It is an ancient place on which just a few of us live…… my sister is one of them. She is happy there amongst the gulls and the puffins, and her man is good for her. We hope that they will raise many children.
Today, I will be meeting one of their kinfolk. He has sailed across the straits with news. Apparently, traders have arrived there, and they wish to deal with us.
Iron ore they bring…. Of a quality that we could use and need.
Word has it that they have come from the islands to the far North… far away.
It is an opportunity and I must investigate further.
We have tin and horses that I know will be of use to them and I may even be required to go with them, back to their brochs in the North….. time will tell.
I see the sea, beneath me.
There is his camp fire……. ‘
When the Romans arrived in the SW of England and then again, in Western Scotland, they recognised similarities between the peoples who resided in these disparate regions….. we know not what it was, but trade will certainly have created bonds and similarities between people all over ancient Britain, from Shetland to Kent to Devon, Wales and Ireland….. we were all intertwined.
