Sarum

Travel, learn and experience

I have been summoned by my lord the Bishop….Bishop Poor !

For a man of such wealth it is a strange name. However, I smile because this arrogant man has upset our civil authorities and the sheriff of Sarum took action.

The Bishop was trying to usurp the laws of our land and replace them with his own theocratic laws….. we did not like this and complained to the sheriff. He and the Bishop had a terrible argument. At this mornings prayers the bishop and his clerics carried out their usual ritual of parading around the town walls. They left the castles protection with their cross held aloft and prayed as they sang….

I laughed at the sight of the town guards, under orders from the sheriff, as they dropped the portcullis and closed our great oak gates behind them……..

Hahahahaha….. we all looked down from the walls as the clerics looked up at as and admonished us for doing such a thing. Their admonishments became threats and then curses. Could you believe it….. these holy men swearing at us!

I never thought I would see such a thing

Eventually, sitting on the old ‘banks’ looking over the great ditch, the sheriff strode out and held a muted conversation with Bishop Poor, in the shadow of our walls.

He came back smiling, and shouted out to all that the priests will not return.

To cheers and laughs we went about our business.

I stand and aim my bow out into the fields beneath the town.

The Bishop requested that I should shoot an arrow. He claims that he will build a new and greater cathedral wherever my arrow lands…… a bold claim.!

My arrow flew through the evening air and landed barely a hundred cloth yards from where we stand.

He and his followers strode down to the arrow and plucked it out of the ground….. they carried on walking, off into the distance and out of sight.

Rumour has come back to me that the Bishop found my arrow embedded in the flank of a great stag which had bounded away after being hit. ( I’m sure that the clergy should not lie). Apparently, the stag eventually fell in a meadow at the confluence of several shallow streams, about three miles from here….. I couldn’t possibly loose an arrow that far.

Anyway, he now has to build that cathedral……. I’m going to be curious to see what happens next.

Although I’m sure that the first thing to be built will be a market place and a Bishops palace……..
