This place is boggy and poor ground for a fight…

“I was mustered six months ago at Dunrobin Castle.

Our Earl of Sutherland put out the call to all of his mustermen and tacksmen… I thought it best to volunteer rather than be conscripted. They gave me boots and a wee woollen jacket that fits me poorly but keeps me warm.

Last night the Jacobites attempted to ambush us at Nairn, but from what we see, it was a bit of a disaster for their clansmen.

We men, of the Sutherland clan, were given order to make chase…. And it’s been a hoot.

For four miles they ran, but it appears that they have now formed up in front of us, and are finally preparing to fight.

We know that other friendly clans are coming up to support us, as are government cavalry and artillery.

This place is boggy and poor ground for a fight and we think we’ll hold the line and force them to charge us…. It seems logical.

Ahhhh…. I hear the ‘hurrah’!……. The Duke of Cumberland has finally joined us, and along with British and Hessian troops we now number about 7000 men.

The guns have opened up but through the rain, sleet and mist we cannot see the damage they do…. The screams tell a tale.

We’ve been given the order to ‘hold fast’…. I believe the Jacobites are coming…!”

Travel broadens the mind…. And history isn’t always what you may think it to be.
