The Collegiate Bell Chimed….
The collegiate bell chimed this morning and I awoke with a start….
Today is the ‘end of term’, and I have two examinations….one this morning and one this afternoon.
I showered briefly, popped two slices of bread into the toaster and poured a cup of tea. …. A very strong cup of tea! Slurping it down quickly ( as you do) I slipped into my brogues, tied my cravat and donned a blazer.
I’m late!!!!!
Geography is my examination today and I’m hopeful of a degree…. Hopeful being the word…. Did I say that I’m late!
The punts are all lined up and waiting for passengers that probably won’t arrive today. It’s an important day in the life of the college.
Ah!!!… there’s George. He’s in a hurry too. Perhaps none of us should have descended upon the White Hart last night. It was to be the last chance we chaps…. We ‘merry men’, as Shakespeare said, had to let our hair down and enjoy each others company. We enjoyed it too much!
The beer flowed, the chatter was loud….. and hardly a thought was given to our exams this morning.
I had my eye on Catherine all night too. She is such an exquisite beauty ( and she has a wonderful mind too…. She studies philosophy!). She flirted with me, and of course, I then had every reason under the moon to stay in the pub and flirt back. I was hopeful!
Anyway, with any luck I may just make it to the exam hall.
‘Oh hello Daniel. Are you late too?…’ I smirked, as Daniel Clitheroe grimaced in my direction, ‘ a bad head as well?’ I asked.
He nodded. ‘Learning about the geography and placement of Scottish distilleries went a step too far last night’,
I smiled.
A freezing sleet starts to fall as we open the great oak doors that give us passage into the college examination hall….. and perhaps a passage into the world and career as a cartographer.
I hope. My head thumps!
