The Cliffs

The cliffs and coastline on North Devon in SW England are a geological wonder. It’s a relatively unpopulated part of England and lends itself to long walks and relaxed stays. Small towns and villages such as Clovelly, Hartland, Bradworthy, Lynton and Lynmouth all shout out at you about times gone by. The air is thick with strong North Devonian accents and it’s a place that still remembers the ancient tribes who used to live here in the way the locals pronounce Devon….Dubn… the Romans used to call these people the Dumnonii…. When you walk the cliff tops, you’ll invariable be met by a happy goldie or a soggy retriever with tongues lollygagging, their human companions in tow. The views are splendid and walking the coast from Hartland to Clovelly you’ll have gorgeous views of Lundy Island…. And perhaps a shipwreck or two lying amongst the rocky coves beneath.

Bluebells ( at the right time of year) will carpet the wooded slopes, usurping the snowdrops that were there just days before, and the rocky coves are at peace as the isolated residents in their thatched cottages bake bread and eat the catch of the day.

It’s a place I was born into and still love with all my heart.

I’ll be back in the Spring…. and I look forward to a pint of the local beer whilst gazing out to see and listening to the gulls who will be eying my cheese sandwich hungrily.
