The Azov….

I love to visit Greece and here is one of my favourite works of art… The Azov, engaged at the Battle of Navarino (painted by Ivan Aivazovsky.). Allied forces from Britain, France, and Russia decisively defeated Ottoman and Egyptian forces which were trying to suppress the Greeks, thereby making Greek independence much more likely.

The Greek Rebellion became a successful war of independence by Greek revolutionaries against the Ottoman Empire, (who had ruled what we now know as Greece since the 15thC) between 1821 and 1829. The Greeks were later assisted by Great Britain, France and Russia, while the Ottomans were aided by their North African vassals, particularly Egypt. The war led to the formation of modern Greece and has been considered a European nation ever since. The revolution is celebrated by Greeks around the world as independence day on 25 March.

The area (that became Greece) came under Ottoman rule in the 15th century, in the decades before and after the fall of Constantinople. During the following centuries, there were sporadic but unsuccessful Greek uprisings against Ottoman rule. In 1814, a secret organization called Filiki Eteria (Society of Friends) was founded with the aim of liberating Greece, encouraged by the revolutionary fervor gripping Europe in that period………..
