Rhodes :-)
The gateway to the ancient port city of Rhodes in Greece.
The first time I ever went to Rhodes, my wife and I flew into the small airport terminal and found it to be almost deserted, which for me was a treat as I don’t like airports particularly busy ones. This was off season travel at its best, already . We navigated customs and baggage claim and met our cab driver in the parking area.
He spoke English and gave us a simple narrative about one or two of the small villages we drove through as we headed into the city of Rhodes…. Yes the island and city are both called Rhodes.
As we arrived at the city gates….literally, I was thrilled with what we were about to explore and research for upcoming tours. The gates, the walls and the old port area were far more intact and impressive than I expected.
The cab driver dropped us off in our hotel, deeply embedded in the old quarter of town. Our Belgian host was awaiting and she checked us in.
We were both itching to go and explore what we had already glimpsed briefly, so we threw our bags onto the floor, grabbed a bottle of water and headed out.
Immediately the history and age of this great city, hit us…….. everything reeked of the Hospitallers and Templars, of Alexander The Great and The Ottomans…. It was astonishing and we had just stepped back in time.
A wonderful place to visit.
