London
Walking across the bridge, London has come to life.
Blurry eyed office workers, transport staff, nurses and many others in uniforms that represent the military of the world.
Three years ago, I was living peacefully in Gdańsk in Poland. My shipping business was doing very well and I was looking forward to the ‘good life’.
I was dating then…. Her name was Hilda Smallridge…. Today her name is Hilda Polomski, because we married here in London, just a week ago.
It was a joyful day.
I met her at the party of a mutual friend. She was working as an attaché for the Royal Navy and therefore we had a lot in common. It’s thanks to her that I and three hundred of my Polish sailors and their families fled to England just before this awful war began. We are all having to build new lives at the same time as we worry about those who are struggling in Poland.
My three ships have been requisitioned by the Merchant navy here in Britain and we are tasked with the job of re supplying Russia with weapons and equipment…… it will be dangerous. The ‘Murmansk Run’ is dangerous.
Hilda is working out of her office in Bath, a beautiful city, but because of recent bombing runs over the city, she and almost everyone else is living in squalid conditions outside of the city.
Fear is everywhere……. But hope is alive and well.
I hear English, Czech, Australian, New Zealand, Indian, South African, French and many many other accents and voices around me, and I feel like I am a part of something unstoppable….
Picking my way around some of the rubble left by last nights bombings, I greet a couple of soldiers who are manning their anti aircraft gun, that points into the skies above Westminster. A WREN is handing out hot mugs of tea….
All will be well !
