He Was The Son Of Tytila….
He was the son of Tytila, and the king of the Angles in Anglia.
He was a great man…. And an honest man.
His name was Rædwald. He was my king.
I am with others who are tasked with pulling his great ship, up onto the river bank. He will be buried here, under a great mound.
Under his rule, the ‘hundreds’ have multiplied and we have had to create many new shires. This land is abundant and he has protected it and us well.
It is my honour to be here at his passing.
His will be a burial under the stars as a true pagans should be and he is wearing his finest armour and will be able to play his music in the afterlife. His wife has demanded that……. Although my suspicion is that Rædwald would have preferred a Christian burial. Spiritually he was confused….. or perhaps he was just a clever man and kept us all loyal to him. He adhered to our common laws… fair laws that we can all live by, …. and he defended them.
He succeeded well and will be laid to rest, here, with other great kings, above the River Deben.
Here at Sutton Hoo, Rædwald will remain amongst his peers, and we shall honour him.
Before the year is over, and the frosts settle, my family and I will have moved further inland. There is good farmland on this great island. We shall prosper too. I am a proud Angle and my people and I are numerous enough to hold our own council and gather in our own hundred. Our farms will spread across the landscape, our ridges will be high and our furrows will be deep.
The new religion has decided that their ‘parishes’ should encapsulate our shires ( a hundred hundreds), and I’m sure they will interfere further, but so be it………….
