Ghosts Of Scapa Flow Murmur…

The ghosts of Scapa Flow murmur on a sunny day…. They howl during a storm….. and they sing melodically after a dram of the ‘good stuff’ from its rare breeds distillery.

Almost the most northerly distillery in Scotland, I love visiting this place…. And yes! I do enjoy their tastings

Something that I’ve been able to enjoy, myself, over the years, is the coastal walk adjacent to the distillery’s warehouses. Heck, I’ve even been known to lie on the grass, allowing the North Atlantic winds to blow the heady scotch fumes from my brain.

The walk is sublime. Grassy tracks enable me to look out to sea, towards the final resting place of great fleets. Large numbers of German warships lie out in the bay….. adjacent to a small number of British ships…. They all lie quietly in the mud…. murmering, howling and singing! Whales can be seen swimming by, and a very occasional fishing boat or ferry will dance across the water in the distance.

Nodding to the local farmer as she brushes the woolly coats of the Highland cattle, has become a ritual. I’m fascinated by the way these huge animals react to her brushing and de-knotting ( is that even a word?)…. They’re very happy….

So is she!

So am I!

I love Orkney
