Coffee On A Cliff

I wake up this morning in a beautiful Victorian hotel that is perched on the edge of Plymouth Hoe. It’s day 10 of our SW England tour and I need coffee….. I really need coffee.

Saying good morning to the lass in reception, I dash out the huge glazed doors and walk the 30 yards up to the grassy area known to locals as ‘The Hoe’. It’s essentially a very large memorial park that sweeps down to the cliffs and thence into the sea…. It’s beautiful!…and it’s purportedly where Sir Francis Drake was playing bowls as the Spanish Armada was sighted in the English Channel.

I walk hurriedly, waving at a gentlemen walking his two labradors, with pooper scooper and black bags in hand.

The gulls are loud this morning and as I look up I can see a couple of Royal Navy ships sailing out of the ‘sound’ beneath the cliffs.

Plymouth has historically been very important to the navy and it’s presence here during WW2 resulted in it being the most heavily bombed city in Britain ( per capita). It’s also why so many great statues are perched on their pedestals, looking nobley out to sea.

Aaaahhhhh…. I can smell the coffee!!!!

I cross the road underneath the bandstand and the lighthouse…….. there is my destination.

It’s a small coffee shop that sits in an old gun emplacement, in a very commanding position. The coffee and bacon sandwich are always excellent….. in fact I’d say the best coffee I’ve ever had…. Yup, the day is starting well
