Day 1 - This afternoon we will meet in our Orkney Island hotel for a tour briefing and get together, before heading out for a group dinner and a proper chance to get to know one another.

Day 2 - Feeling rested?… good! After a hearty breakfast we’re heading out to see one of the iconic sites in the Orkneys..The Ring of Brodgar. We’’ll start the discussion about the ancient history of the British Isles as we wander amongst the stones. The Stones of Stenness… yes another dramatic stone circle…. stand defiantly, nearby. Lets explore.

Day 3 - This morning we’ll drive up to the Brough Of Birsay. Birsay is a tidal island and we’ll time todays activities to enable us to get onto the island and examine the Pictish fortress that sits boldly upon it. Who were the Picts?…. who were the Vikings who eventually landed here and also made it home? After a picnic lunch we’ll drive out to Maeshowe to visit a tomb. This is a very special tomb which has a wonderful history. Its story will be told. Tonight you are free to enjoy dinner in Kirkwall.

Day 4 - This morning we’ll finish breakfast and head up to Yesnaby…a beautiful clifftop walk that highlights the best of Orkneys coastline. A picnic lunch will be provided. This afternoon we’ll enjoy a short trip to Unstans Chambered Cairn…. Yet another Neolithic monument. After our intrepid adventure, we head back to Kirkwall.

Day 5 - In the 1940’s, some great naval barriers were built to prevent German submarine from raiding British shipping. These are still used to connect some of Orkneys islands to each other as road causeways The Churchill Barriers are their name, and this morning we will take a look. They were in part constructed by Italian prisoners of war, 1200 of whom lived in three different camps. Their endeavours were also responsible for the construction of an ornate Italian chapel. Our mission today is to explore the chapel, the islands of Ronaldsay, Lamb Holm and Burray and to look out over Some of the waterways of Scapa Flow.

Day6 - Onwards next to an amazing place. It’s called Skara Brae and is the most complete Neolithic village in Europe, as well as being a part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. A late lunch will be sought in the town of Stromness. Its the largest town in the Orkneys with only 2100 residents. You’ll have chance to explore the town before we reunite and head back across the island, to Kirkwall

Day 7 - This morning we leave our island home on Burray, and head back onto the main island of Orkney for a visit to the Earls Castle…. Yes, a little mediaeval experience today. Along with a visit into St Magnus Cathedral, today will give you a chance to understand a little more about island life. Dinner together, tonight in another of the islands great little restaurants.

Day 8 - Today is a day of fond farewells. After breakfast we will shuttle group members to the airport in Kirkwall……
