Brittany - 10 Day Tour
April 18th - April 27th
Day 1 - Meet & Greet in Dinan followed by an interesting and enjoyable walking tour of this historic market town. This evening we’ll gather in a fabulous local restaurant for a great meal together.
Day 2 - We know its not in Brittany, but today is a chance to visit the UNESCO world heritage site of Mont St Michel. With a guided tour and an incredible walk to the to of this iconic monument, the abbey will be brought to life in a memorable way. Upon our return we’ll take a slight detour… The American WW2 cemetery at St James is a sobering place. we’ll introduce you to some of the young men who laid down their lives so that Europe could be safe. Its a place that is not overrun with tourism and we know it’ll touch your heart. Returning to Dinan, you’ll be free for dinner tonight.
Day 3 - After breakfast, we’re going to explore the local market and then drive to an amazing seaport that has a great story to tell…St Malo!. With its high sea wall and defences, we’ll talk to you about piracy, and about WW2. We’ll explain Brittanys relationship with the sea and how its people have a fierce sense of independence. After lunch we’d like to show you an incredible rock sculpture at Rotheneuf, before heading off to Cancale for some splendid views and delicious oysters, taken straight from the sea. You’re free for dinner again tonight, in one of Dinans many restaurants and bistros.
Day 4 - Off to Cap Frehel, we go. A wonderful landmark on the wild coast of Northern Brittany, we’ll walk the five kilometres from the great lighthouse, along the cliffs, to an impressive fortress…Fort Latte. Famous for its role in the Kirk Douglas spectacular ‘Vikings’, its held a strategic role along the coast for centuries. A picnic lunch will be provided along the way and we”ll pay a visit to the impressive town of Morlaix. Afterwards we head out to the far west of Brittany and checkin to our hotel in Roscoff, where we’ll give you an orientation of this fascinating little town.
Day 5 - We’re close to the Pink Granite Coast so we’re going to explore this area of amazing geology. Today we head off to Ploumenach to see some incredible geological features….. works of art created by ‘Mother Nature’ herself. We’ll take a walk amongst the stones and let you have lunch in this lovely little seaside village. This afternoon You’re going to visit ‘the end of the world’. Fisterre means just that, and on a headland looking out to see is a tomb ! Barnenez is a huge neolithic structure that sits on a headland looking out to sea. We’ll explain the significance to you. Free for dinner tonight in Roscoff.
Day 6 - Driving through the Breton countryside, we’ll visit a small chapel on a hill in the highlands of Brittany (its not very high!), and its called Montagne St Michel. A lovely view across the landscape is provided along with a little background on the Breton saints. Then, onwards to the extraordinary village of Pleyben, the home to a monolithic church. Lunch in Quimper along with the opportunity to explore its timber framed streets and museums along with a glass of wine or a coffee. This will be followed by the drive to the outskirts of the historic town of Vannes. We’ll make it our home for tonight.
Day 7 - Today, you have a free day in which you can explore the town. Its lovely port area offers places to eat and relax, but first we’ll give you a guided tour of the town and its ancient walls. Originally a Roman town its now home to a great cathedral and you can wander lazily through its timber framed streets, perhaps stopping for a glass of its local brew, cider. We’ll enjoy dinner together in a local restaurant tonight.
Day 8 - Brittany is famous for its ancient history. With a huge number of neolithic tombs and stone alignments, we’ve elected to take you to the biggest and most important of them all… Carnac. A local guide will introduce us to this, the greatest of human achievements, 6500 years ago. After lunch we’ll he’d to a local museum in Locmariaquer, where a surprise awaits !. You’ll be free for dinner tonight.
Day 9 - This Southern part of Brittany has been famous for its inland sea and many islands. We’d like to take you one of these so that you can examine the way of life for the islanders for yourselves. The afternoon will give us chance to show off one of the prettiest villages in France… Rochefort En Terre. Tonight we’ll enjoy a fabulous dinner together and reminisce about our Breton adventures
Day 10 - Tour is over after breakfast.
